Max Liebermann moved into his summer house on the Wannsee Lake in Berlin in 1910. He meticulously planned the gardens together with his friend Alfred Lichtwark, director of the Hamburg Kunsthalle Museum. In the course of the following years Liebermann portrayed this little private refuge from many different angles in over 200 works. While the three formally designed hedge gardens play a central role in the general concept, the birch tree avenue, the flower terrace, the tea pavilion and the kitchen garden also harmoniously blend with Liebermann‟s horticultural paradise on the Wannsee Lake.

The three main elements of Liebermann‟s garden – the hedge gardens, the birch tree avenue and the flower garden – feature as freely and imaginatively arranged references on the roof of the Art and Exhibition Hall. Even the visual axes of the original garden can be identified. The exhibition has not only been supplemented but also enhanced by this temporary display on the Art and Exhibition Hall‟s roof which recreates one of Germany‟s most beautiful artistic gardens.
