The Art and Exhibition Hall is pleased to able to present the first-ever exhibition in Germany of the magnificent treasures of the Daigo-ji, one of the most ancient monasteries in Japan. The exhibition consists of some 160 outstanding works, among them large-scale sculptures, valuable paintings and scrolls, exquisite ritual objects, superb calligraphy, historical documents and sutras, the sacred scriptures of Buddhism.
The Art and Exhibition Hall has been able to secure the loan of an unprecedented number of works designated as National Treasure or Important Cultural Property. The exhibition introduces the visitor to esoteric Shingon Buddhism, a form of Buddhism particular to Japan, and showcases the fabled Daigo-ji mountain monastery, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Founded in 874 AD, the Daigo-ji south of Kyoto has a history reaching back more than 1100 years and continues to be one of the most influential religious centres and a key pilgrimage site. |
