Max Liebermann
Pioneer of Modern Art
21 April to 11 September 2011
Media conference: 20 April 2011, 11 a.m.

Max Liebermann (1847–1935) is celebrated as one of the most important pioneers of Modernism. Before his espousal of plein-air painting, he produced naturalistic works that addressed social issues. His oeuvre, more than that of any other painter, documents the changes in everyday life and society in Germany from the establishment of the German Empire in 1871 to the upheavals of the 1930s. This first comprehensive Liebermann retrospective since 1998 presents the painter in a new light – as a key figure in the development of modern art in Germany and Europe who continues to exert a decisive influence on painting.

Curators: Robert Fleck and Marie-Amélie zu Salm-Salm
Exhibition manager: Agnieszka Lulinska
An exhibition of the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn, in cooperation with the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
