World Chess Championship at the Forum
of the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn

October 14 to November 2, 2008

Viswanathan AnandViswanathan Anand (India) is the winner of the World Chess Championship 2008! The World Champion from India defended his title with a 6,5:4,5 victory against Vladimir Kramnik ( Russia ).

The Art and Exhibition Hall will present attractive events on the occasion of the World Chess Championship:
Through the looking-glass II
Beauty and elegance of problems and solutions in chess and mathematics

Every match day at 3 pm the grand master of chess Helmut Pfleger and his expert team will comment on the match live at the commentatory hall (East Galery). On his stage there will be talks everyday at 4 pm to see chess from an extensive point of view and to show it's overall scheme.

The affinity between mathematics and chess is obvious:  the structures, the rules, the problems, the solutions, the luck of dissolution, the abstraction, the intellectual deep, the elegance of solution, the formulas, the deduction.

On the occasion of the World Chess Championship to be held for the first time after 74 years again in Germany, the Art and Exhibition Hall will take a look at the connection and multiple coincidence of art, play, culture, science and philosophy and would like to present it as entertainment on stage.

„For the boundary of 64 squares of the playing ground and for just a few plain rules there is a miraculous complexity reflecting symbolically basic aspects of the human existence. Chess is a kind of combative sports and at the same time a sounding board for aesthetics, passion, intellectual heroism, a whole kingdom of ideas, emotion, imagination, outstanding views, mental effort to the left or right hemisphere, bundled creativity and wonderful harmony between the logical and paradoxical elements.“ (Christian Hesse, mathematician)

Invited on stage are
:
Peer Steinbrück, Ugo Dossi, Christian Hesse, Vitali Klitschko, Robert von Weizsäcker, Vaile, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Ernst Strouhal , Herbert Molderings, Martin Stankowski, Jürgen Becker, Michael Negele, Felix Magath, Stefan Meyer-Kahlen, Christopher Lutz, Volker Huber, Boris Spassky und Matthias Deutschmann.
