The Unknown Collection from Bielefeld

28 January to 27 March 2011

Commissioned and endowed by German entrepreneur Rudolf-August Oetker and built by American architect Philip Johnson, the Kunsthalle Bielefeld is one of the most beautiful art museums in Germany. Its little-known collection boasts masterpieces of modern art by artists such as Max Beckmann, Alexej von Jawlensky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, August Macke, Man Ray, Emil Nolde and Pablo Picasso. Initiated in 1950 with a donation by Oetker and gradually expanded from 1954 with municipal acquisitions, the collection focuses on Expressionism, international sculpture and exemplary positions of contemporary art.

With a selection of some 120 works, the exhibition presents the Kunsthalle Bielefeld as an important collection of art of the 20th and 21st century.
