Interior of the salon in the Bundeskunsthalle

Read the newspaper in peace, take a lunch break with friends or colleagues, reflect on the exhibition visit or just relax. The room designed by chmara.rosinke/OFIS invites you to linger and is open to everyone – visitors and neighbors, clubs and colleagues. The stay is free of charge. Current daily newspapers and books from the library complement the room's furnishings. The time in the salon can be freely organized according to one's own wishes.

English Book Club

Hunchback is another debut work of fiction—this time by Japanese author Saou Ichikawa, translated by Polly Barton. Published just a few years ago, this novella is already regarded as one of the most important recent works in Japanese literature, praised for its powerful critique of ableism in modern society.

August: Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
Continuing this summer with yet another critically acclaimed debut — this time from Ghanaian-American writer Yaa Gyasi. Her novel Homegoing is a work of historical fiction, with each chapter following a woman of Asante descent.

September: Demian by Hermann Hesse
Demian by Hermann Hesse is our September pick. We’ll follow the story of a boy, Emil Sinclair, who is raised in a bourgeois family and faces various questions of morality and self-exploration. Feel free to read the book in the original German, but as always, we’ll discuss it in English.
